I think Stendahl was going for a facetious, witty style, but it doesn't work with this translation, if indeed with any, and since this was written a long time ago, it isn't relevant now.

Learned so much about the early days of the US and got a new, clearer understanding of the War of 1812. A fascinating, detailed study of a brilliant man.

Still reading it. Having some difficulty in believing all the assertions.
