it’s 2am, i have a giant headache, i’ve been reading for like 6 hours, and it’s only now gotten interesting enough that i’d not want to put it down. unfortunately, exhaustion is more compelling. (also that this story is literally way too long lmao)

you know, for a book with a matriarchy, it's about time there were some wlw. sorely lacking in lesbians tho. as always

The Counting of Vermillion Beads: sometimes context really helps. i felt like there was a blanket of mist and fog that made the story a little unreachable but like... not in a bad way? lol

Girls Who Twirl and Other Dangers: it was okay. i liked learning about Navrātri, and i enjoyed the myth of Mā Durgā and Mahishāsur. tbh i liked it better than the actual retelling lol

Daughter of the Sun: very magical, though sometimes the writing style became distracting. it feels like an original fairy tale, full of whimsy and hope and love.

Spear Carrier: the hardest of passes. just. no. thanks.

The Smile: this was fine. i liked that it questioned the legitimacy of master/servant relationships instead of romanticizing it. it felt both slow and rushed, though? i need to sit with this one for a while.

Still Star-Crossed: Nothing actually happens in this one. I’m mildly confused because I’m trying to understand the point but failing.

Eyes like Candlelight: this one was OK. the first part of the story was paced really well and then it kinda fell off near the end, though it's not bad by any means.

Steel Skin: This story was all over the place. Jumped around in time a lot, and I could never decipher what was going on. maybe i'm stupid? who knows!

The Crimson Cloak: this is my favorite so far! it /felt/ magical and i love the narrator's voice

Bullet, Butterfly: interesting, could (probably should) be a longer tale only to expand on world building and avoid insta-love

Olivia's Table: great short story. i really want some of the food mentioned!!

Code of Honor: I cannot even BEGIN to formulate the words to describe just how much I did Not enjoy this story. I am so sad.

Forbidden Fruit: that was uhh... underwhelming
