Is Sam Fuller asserting that the source of the perversions and unhealthy addictions in this book is attributed to sexual frustration and repression? Because I'm worried that's what he's saying...

So I figured the book might be more explicit than the movie, but whoo whee...Kelly's backstory was more graphic than I expected. Fuller isn't pulling any punches when it comes to frankness in dealing with sexuality, from the lust of teenage hormones to the ugliness of perversion.

Wasn't expecting to get a detailed rundown of Buff's dad's history, but it was a fascinating detour.

So I was excited to read this to flesh out the characters I knew from the movie, really dive into their histories and psyche, and the book is! But man, knowing a detail about a certain character that will be revealed later on is making my flesh crawl reading any chapter from his point of view.

Also nice to see Fuller inject his war experiences into the story.

"She looked out the window at the small stores. Another street, another town. She never cared. For two years she had worked small towns and couldn't remember their names. She saw her reflection in the window and stared at her hair. It was beautiful and real. Every stand was her own. She looked in her purse. Time to set up shop again."

Sam Fuller's writing sparks just as I imagined it would.

Reading this book because it's from one of my favorite contemporary film directors. His stuff tends to be pretty R/NC-17 rated, so I was curious when I heard this book is the closest to something family friendly he's ever put out.

After reading the first chapter, um...I guess if your kids are into fucked up childbirth body horror nightmare fuel, then sure.

In settling on a voice for Smaug, I ended up more Benedict Cumberbatch than Richard Boone and that was absolutely the right choice.
