When does an extended conversation become simple exposition? There are times when history and motivation can and should be revealed through a conversation. That's what books ARE. But it is a LITTLE surprising that Ford lives next to the one person who knows the entire history of the poorest country in Central America.

The Darr (of the Darre culture?) have some... barbaric traditions. But Jemisin is really turning this story into something more cohesive and easier to follow. We are starting to understand who Yeine is, even if we still don't entirely know why she is here.

If you make it to Chapter 13, the world gets cleared up very quickly. I shoulda waited 10 more minutes.

This went from well-written, but confusing to... we are on the trail of something fascinating.

N.K. Jemisin is clearly good at building a world. She has set up caste systems and a vibrant religion.
But I am still trying to figure out exactly what is happening in this story. The main character has traveled to a city to find out more about her family.
I think this is where I am struggling- Jemisin is spending so much time building the world that the motivations foe the characters are unclear.

It is a bit strange that every single female character from folk and fairy tales is depicted as a full-figured 27 year old in a tiny dress.
The characters' motivations are much more diverse than their appearances.
