I always used to stick with bad books in the hope they'd improve. while I no longer do so with novels, short story collections are different, and 'Falling' by Pippa DaCosta is a distinct improvement, a Firefly-like vignette of spacers outside the law.

(Excelsior continued) This, along with the background of our main character, is explained TWICE in the first few pages. Confusingly explained, there is also a cold war between East and West. Scott likes to throw in lots of acronyms (and explain them) and show his working, some of which is so off as to be laughable. Found myself skimming, even this short story.

Second story also pretty terrible. 'Excelsior' by Jaspar T. Scott is set in a future where the world is split between the Geners of the North, who tweak their genome for perfection and effective immortality, and the natural-born and poor 'degenerates' of the south. The only ways to move North are money, or serving in the Geners' army, as they are loathe to risk their immortality to violence...

I started this as I fancied some 'proper' old fashioned space faring SF. First story, 'Mercenary in Escrow', by Erik Wecks, was rather poor, 2 stars, so hope the quality improves.

Why fight the good fight, fight the good fight? Why not let them burn?
I dread the day when the suffering of my fellow is none of my concern.

I will not turn against my brother for his creed or for his colour
Nor the one he takes his lover
Nor his class
And you that beckon me that - you shall not pass

Not that I've been feverishly following this election of a foreign leader, but the way the predictions have been moving since the weekend have rather calmed my nerves. Nevada, Florida and North Carolina have all been fluctuating but it does look like they're swinging to Clinton. Fingers crossed, US, please don't let me wake up to a nasty surprise! http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2...

I'm really seeking to extend my knowledge of ancient history beyond that narrow focus we're taught in UK schools: basically, not much beyond the Romans, that largely concerned with the occupation of Britain. As such, I'm learning many fascinating things from Holland's book (the Iranshahr empire that was a match for Rome, the peoples of Arabia caught between them) but most shockingly that there was an Emperor Maurice.
