Somewhere in Alaska, on the coast of the Bering Sea, I'm in a place I have never been to before.

Interesting style - narrated by one of the characters as a kind of monologue.

Reading this alongside "What we talk about when we talk about love" to observe the differences between edited and unedited versions of the same stories. Fascinating, but love this version more.

This is rather like a bowl of gruel. Thin and insubstantial, not giving you the nourishment you need. There is a hint of flavour, a sense that there was once some meat in here, but it has long since been lost and watered down.

Enjoying this very much so far!

Too interesting to read quickly.

Loving every minute of this book. There is so much to learn from it.

At first, I was sceptical about what an 89 year old Irish woman was telling me about Boko Haram. Then I discovered the problem - I had to get over myself first.

This is going to take a while to read. A small comment on page 7 led me to a 2,000 word essay/reminiscence.

"By the age of eleven he was eating a plate of Roquefort before going to bed, in the hope of adding to the splendour of his dreams."

When you quote Odysseus and Oliver Sachs in the same paragraph you have me hooked Mr Josipovici.

This is beautifully done, speaking the mind of a boy who is unable to say more than muffled sounds but can think so deeply. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, always brilliant (so far!).

What an amazing first chapter. So much happening in three or four pages.

Wow! This is good.

Six pages in and I'm utterly in love with this book.

There is a bleakness in some of these stories that reminds me of the solitary figures in Edward Hopper paintings.
