About halfway now. So far I'm liking this book quite a lot, but it's missing that ineffable quality that makes me love a book. Still there have been enough awesome moments that that could come in the second half. Currently this is feeling a 4-4.5 star. I like all the characters, the dialogue, the action, and the plot quite a bit, though I did feel we were doing setup for quite a while. Excited for the Heartwyld next.

The Magic Book of Accidental City Destruction: A Book Wizard's Guide: 4 stars. Fun story, though not sure if I would say it is prize worthy. Still, pretty solid.

A bit easier to get into than the first one but still nothing special. But probably 4 star material.

This last section of the book was a bit boring, but nothing too bad

Overall good start so far, though some basic writing mistakes like inserting paragraphs of random backstory between bits of engaging dialogue. It doesn’t bore me, just takes me out a bit. But I have more grace for self published work.

4.5 stars. Great book, really enjoyed it, but didn't feel an urge to keep picking it up, but that's not necessarily a terrible thing. I do think it could have been better with a little more tension, but I respect the author's choice to want to make it as tension-free / low-stakes as possible while still being able to tell a story.
