Benjamin Fasching-Gray is on page 109 of 336 of Black Communist in the Freedom Struggle: The Life of Harry Haywood
That's the most I've ever read about the African Blood Brotherhood, a secret society from around the same time as Garvey that joined the Communist Party.

Found this under the bed with a bookmark in it. Dimly remember something about two sisters, money's tight. Love this bit about a 35 yr old bachelor "if he were ever animated enough to be in love, must have long outlived any sensation of the kind" BURN

I am so vulnerable at the moment I nearly cried because moms, locked away trauma, and being the light... in a YA fantasy thriller. I must have a vitamin deficiency. Or I am just one emotional white boy living in the Martial Empire.

I'm thinking a "skills center" that is more about computers and tech stuff sounds great, but the author is saying it's to train Jamaicans to staff call centers and that their patois keeps them from getting the jobs anyway. grrr.

wow: "a morning trip to the bathroom often means a bleary-eyed trek through the streets, toothbrush in hand, to the shared men's and women's facilities..." "this intense intimacy... is a celebrated element of ghetto life" as opposed to middle class people who brush their teeth all alone.

Whoa. Thought this was gonna be about Dancehall, and I guess it will be, but the introduction is all about neoliberalism and re-thinking of "unemployed" as "urban improvisers," an idea that comes from James Ferguson. This is gonna be GOOD.

Plot twist! It's all a bit stiff and courtly, and the rivalries are like middle school bitchy without the sexual tension. Still, I am enjoying it.

Benjamin Fasching-Gray is on page 95 of 248 of Going South: Jewish Women in the Civil Rights Movement
Reading about how Southern Jewish congregations supported segregation while so many Northern Jewish individuals and organizations actively opposed it has an eerie echo in the claims some Jews make today that antizionist Jews are a tiny minority to be ignored. Southern Jews opposed to segregation were a tiny minority. It's inherently conservative to dismiss opinions as "minority."

Just started but it's a fast paced thriller... not sure if I shouldn't try something more relaxing. I like the Masks the oppressor-army officers have to wear... like the flipside to Paul Dunbar

The main character is very sympathetic. I can relate. The clues were all there in my childhood, that my adult life would be in an ecological catastrophe.

18th century sugar plantations were freakin' evil... and then one of the things they produced was rum, which then gets traded for more slaves... no matter how far out you zoom or how far in, it's just evil. millions are killed or maimed, a handful get rich, and the rest get tooth decay.

either one reads this in a room of their own after having read Irigaray, Foucault and the rest of 'em, with a dictionary of critical theory nearby, or, like me, you read it on public transport and mutter "right, right, obviously" to yourself after re-reading each sentence 3 times.

Sloppy, casual antisemitism already. Uwe Killing is trying to give context to a Jewish New York Bronx childhood, and he’s saying Jews fled Russia and Poland because they were “wegen ihres Glaubens verfolgt” as if conversion would have saved them. Then he claims that in NYC Jews mainly were businessmen or in finance, but at the time banks refused to hire Jews and if selling rags makes you a businessman...
