Now Bear is back to knowing/learning surgery as in book 1, rather than saying he isn’t allowed to for being ungifted in book 2, while once again only a few weeks have passed since then

I always really like Holly Black's premises, but find that so far the finished stories go either way for me. I'm hoping this one will be awesome like Coldtown rather than a let down like Doll Bones.

Oof. This was not the book to pick up after Mira Grant's well written Parasite. Rough reading so far. Am hoping the quality of writing improves....

I wanted to /headdesk on paragraph 4. In paragraph 1 we find out she's a practically miraculous musical prodigy (like all instruments and singing without trying!) & then from that we go into drooly, 'oh my god he's so hot', kissing against lockers 'romance'. *heaves a huge sigh* Can you tell I'm not a fan of ridiculous teenage romance? But the premise sounds so cool... Will it get less eye-roll inducing? We'll see...

I'm vacillating between bored and interested as the writing vacillates between witty and too much description and telling.

Well this is interesting. Not quite what I was expecting, and it's not a "can't put it down" read, but I'm enjoying it. The art is mostly nice with occasional pockets of awful; I like how it's woven in. Looking forward to finding out if my suspicions for the story are true.

This series is so far in the running for one of my favorite series ever. And I just noticed the illustrations are by Jon Klassen. Can it get anymore perfect? I need to buy the physical books now too if there are more illustrations than the lovely covers!

Listening to this fantastic book again as I've aquired the rest of the series. Katherine Kellgren is one of the most marvelous narrators I've listened to.

I'm sad there wasn't an explanation of how Qwill was able to keep Koko, but am enjoying it so far. We meet Yum-yum in this book! Yay!

Halfway through the book we have murder! It's picking up now. It's so interesting to note the differences in pacing etc. between a book written and published in the 60s vs a modern book.

Finally we've finished the extensive back story and reminiscing ... half way through..... If I didn't want to keep going with this for reading goal purposes and my OCD let me give up on books I would probably just quit listening to this.

It's moving a tad slow, but not horribly. I'm just used to him already having the cat and solving crimes, where as this being the first book, he doesn't even have Koko yet!

Also, the technology in this dates it and is a bit jarring since it's neither modern, futuristic, nor medieval. I have to remember an electric pencil sharpener was new when I find myself wondering why they didn't just google something. ;)

My thoughts immediately upon hitting play: "AHHHH!!!!! It's narrated by Katherine Kellgren! YES!!!!!" I think I could listen to this woman read anything. Doesn't hurt that the story is good too. ;)

Still not thrilled... bogged down with the entire life story of the protagonist. The narrator isn't helping with his smooth monotone reading.

The narration is still wonderful, and there's been a scene that caused me to shed a few tears, but sadly the story doesn't live up to the standard of the first so far.
