The first quarter largely focused on the ascent of the National Socialist Party out of the fringes, and Hitler's ascent behind it. Although available in other books, in this work I would probably appreciate a longer sojourn in the Weimar Republic to see closer the conditions, problems, indecisions, and miscalculations that led to the end of the Weimar Republic and allowed for the ascent of the Nazi Party.

I used to read a lot of works from people who lived through this. Some of this is quite familiar. The first part is Hitler's rise to power from vagabondry, homeless shelters, and minor army service. The account of the economic turbulence (hyperinflation) and political instability in the Weimar Republic is striking.
