I hardly ever read a book with a character I find myself on such a perfectly similar wavelength as I do with Florentino

"We can reproach ourselves for some action, for a remark, but not for a feeling, quite simply because we have no control at all over it."
Too many quotes to choose from....

There are three kinds of boredom: passive boredom like the girl dancing and yawning, active boredom; kite lovers, and rebellious boredom ; young people burning cars and smash and shop windows.

This is a very weird book, and not in a good sense to be honest. It's got some of Murakami's metaphors but the plots aren't necessarily that intriguing. I never thought i'd say something like this about Murakami's works 🥲

Menshiki saying sometimes he feels just empty, that sometimes he feels like everything be has achieved has no real meaning is starting to ring true to me...

"I couldn't easily grasp the individual case here- that this woman refused to love this man, me, and chose to be loved by someone else. It felt terribly absurd, a horribly ugly way to be treated. What i was feeling was fundamental numbness. The numbness your heart automatically activates to lessen the awful pain when you want someone desperately and they reject you. A kind of emotional morphine."

"He wasn't afraid of loving someone. What he feared was growing to hate someone."
One of the major things I have discovered about myself is how easily I can grow to hate someone, and I don't think I have experienced anything scarier than that.
