Pretty meh so far

Excellent so far - swift in the telling of early memories, but also alive with wonder and natural-born story-telling of the author's own life through childhood.

Real life people. Sometimes they make for interesting fiction, sometimes not so much. But at least in Janet Frame's hands they're always believable.

Damn. I have just done some reading on Wikipedia describing this copy as one of the "uninspired" translations, and am now considering halting the reading until I get a copy of the 1985 translation, by the Czech Ewald Osers.

Formatting in this copy of the book is pretty bad. I'm wondering if other more recent versions are the same.

Although the writing is enjoyable, it's struggling to hold my attention for great lengths of time because the narrative constantly shifts forward, with new characters entering the scenario and old ones disappearing.

Finished If This is a Man. Amazing account of how a human can just carry on in the most atrocious circumstances. Levi is never sorrowful, or wallowing in the pain; his straight forward account is not that of bravery, but quite simply, survival.
