Infuriating. Was quite a bit of fun up to here but now characters are acting stupidly and the rest is becoming a slog that I don't want to read aloud, and my partner is not much more interested in hearing.

Such a classic, but how much is perceived quality tainted by nostalgia of youth? Here I am reading Dune out loud to my partner which she so far is enjoying immensely due to political intrigue, but as a fellow writer as an adult, boy is there some atrocious writing thus far!

Quite an engaging read!

Witty and great interplay between the two characters each telling their own parts of the story.

Terribly written book. Zero character engagement, only the slightest character development.

Goddamn Nabokov is good. I don't know if I could continue reading in my head, but reading out loud to my partner and taking breaks for other books helps us both to reflect on how well the character of Humbert is drawn through the ridiculously over the top language employed by Nabokov.

Can't wait to finish so I can move onto something else... :-/

The travelogue adventure up to this point was becoming a bit of a bore with the writing almost journeyman-like. Attacks, near death escapes, sunken ships, etc; all is helping Valentine see his world and how it works, but presented in ho-hum storytelling.

Very "readable" as The Times quote puts it, though at this stage, it's hardly comparable to Dune.

Thoroughly enjoying reading this book to my partner. Great characters, great dialogue!

Tried reading Lolita several times but just couldn't stand the voice of Humbert. This time I'm reading aloud to my partner, as am doing with Alice in Wonderland and previously Animal Farm, so am hoping for better results.

Currently reading this to my partner. Perfectly written for reading out loud.
