This book works hard at your senses and the result is you can almost smell the rotten stench of 18th century Paris, and see its filth & over crowding. Usually I love to be transported into a book. Not in this case.

What's wrong with me? This was supposed to "wreak(s) emotional havoc" but I'm not feeling it at all.

While I'm enjoying this book, I'm getting increasingly annoyed by the religious agenda the author seems to have. All the "good guys" are Christians or non-believers in Shinto & Buddhism. Dutchmen in Japan are all portrayed as scallywags & it subtly blames that on Christianity being forbidden in Japan. Shinto & Buddhism are always portrayed as bad or even evil. A little balance would be nice.

This book has moments that are hypnotic. And occasional moments that make me roll my eyes and skip to the next bit. I do like this: “The word I think of is precarious. I am struck by how precarious it all is. How the things that hold us are only as strong as the faith we have in them.” ― David Levithan, The Realm of Possibility

I don't know if it's just that I'm more in the mood for this now than I was when I first picked it up, but I'm enjoying this now. As an atheist I'm surprised to say I found "the gospel" girls story the best so far. Also loved the guy with his Catcher in the Rye obsessed girlfriend and finding out what was going on in her head. Fascinating and raw - but sometimes a little too self-aware to be attributed to a teen.

The author needs to stop with the attempts at psychology. Too many contradictions are occurring. Characters are constantly presuming to know every feeling of characters they barely know! Less explaining - more describing! There are far too many characters also. Too many for me to invest in. I'm starting to skip over large chunks because I
