You’d think by this point the narrator would have settled in to the proper pronunciation, but no: he longs to return to “oreGONE” and now often does so. I think the key is that even when he gets the vowel more or less correct, he puts too much emphasis on the last syllable, so we always know his true mind.
The book is good. I am just Oregonian and obsessed with this pronunciation issue.
