“It’s a book about an outcast. A guy who feels like the entire world is drowning him in bullshit.”
Chance frowned stupidly. “So?”
“So…that’s who he might be named after.” I turned back to my locker. “Never mind. The book has no pictures in it. You wouldn’t get it.”

I went back downstairs to a quiet dinner with the tension of perpetual worry strung between Dad, Amelia, and myself like wires, pulling us tight, ready to snap.

The air was different now in the house, every second tainted because each one brought us closer to a time when Mom wasn’t going to be here.

The bartender pours me another drink.
“You need it,” he says, a sympathetic look on his face.
Down it goes.

“Yes,” he whispers to me, then says something I don’t understand in Portuguese. Whatever it is, it sounded sexy, especially as he starts to fuck me with more of his fingers, moving in and out, deeper, and curving against me. The wet sound is very loud in the quiet apartment, and almost vulgar.

She’s not moving. “You’re going out in that?” she asks.
I look down at my white t-shirt and grey sweatpants.
“What about it?”
“People will see you.”
I frown at her, confused. “I was just outside in this.”
“Yeah. With your dick print all over the place.”

“You may not realize it, but we Portuguese have influenced a lot of things. The ukulele, marmalade, Portuguese sausage. That last one is very famous. Wait until you have one.”

“That sounds like a weakness in you.”

“The man in the paper boat. You’ve come to take me home.”

My own lungs tug at my throat for a sip of air, but I can’t be bothered to break the kiss. The whole world could ignite into flames right now, and I’d simply revel in its warmth.

“Incontinence, is it?”
“You’re welcome to act as my target again, if you’d like.”

The crowd breaks into a riot of shouts and cheers, some of them climbing the fence that divides the seating from the field. They remind me of riled animals in the presence of a bigger predator.

Sometimes the fact that I'm bordering on psychotic is a blessing. I messed that fucker up bad, and I'm quite proud of the fact.

The walls all around me are darkening and thickening, and I feel like they are sprouting arms. All of these arms have long, pointy fingers which want to rake at my flesh, tearing me apart piece by piece.

It takes seconds for Gabriel to wrap his hands around his head and twist it sharply. There's the sickening sound of bones snapping, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that he's dead.

As far as pep talks go I'm not sure it boosts my spirits any, but when those pliers come for my clit I have bigger problems.
