Author reeeealy likes to stretch to get those scenes. — “Peder, I nearly lost my heart with surprise . . ."

I don’t understand the author’s need to do this. Miri kept the painting on her mind for a year and now she just…dismisses it as if it was nothing. — “But Pa would have been bored, and Marda would have missed the mountain.”

Hmm. Overstated. — “Reading those books had changed her, and…”

Miri, the highschool freshman, practices CBT. — “She wondered if she might be jealous that she was not chosen. No, that thought rang false.”

Wat. Author really jumps the shark.

If the Dance is Olana teaching the girls curties and court dances, then why are they doing a lowlander dance? Whatever. - "The lowlander dances did not separate partners with a ribbon, and Miri found herself holding Peder's hand…”

The antagonist Katar has completely fallen out of the narrative.

Now that I think about it, we don’t really read much about the academy. Not much except the drama with reisisting the teacher’s rules.

Out of place (insincere?) moments of female solidarity in the last half of the book. the book could’ve been crueler and depicted the girls undercuting each other, but it’s still a strange plot to make girls compete against each other just to marry a faceless prince.

Uh…yay for female solidarity? — “"We should make a pact," said Esa. "We'll be happy for whomever he chooses,”

The fight between the prince and peder is going to be dull.

Haha, what. Author, you don’t need to dunk on Katar like that. — “I could not determine the leader. So I will allow you to decide."

Hmmmmm. Author, earlier, you made it a rule that they couldn’t tell who was doing the quarry speech. — “Katar elbowed Miri in the ribs, having no doubt detected Miri's quarry-speech…”

Chapter 15: Miri talks to her sister for the first time in her life.

Every drama needs a secret or a lie. — “…her secret, and holding it to herself felt warm and delicious…”

This is cute, but here’s some history: prices set by the central monarchy often either caused economy crises or they were often ignored (especially in the far away provinces). There’s an interesting story about the reign of Louis the 16th where the struggle to peg prices and helped lower prices actually created large famine.
