I know it sounds pretentious and smug, but I think I'm too advanced to be surprised by anything in this book. It's a fun read, but it just feels... predictable? I love her writing ability and how she makes these characters, but I don't know why it's considered one of the best mysteries/thrillers ever written. It's good, it's amazing writing, but it's not a challenging plot. Maybe it's because I've played danganronpa.

Well-written. This author is able to make an unreliable narrator in a way I have never seen before.

I rescind my previous statement. This may be more complicated than I thought. Regardless, I still think Amy is behind everything.

I think it's pretty obvious what happened. I already kinda knew there was a plot twist because of the words people use when they discuss the book, but I don't really know the details. That said, this is a no-brainer. She did it to herself. She wants him to find her. Every anniversary, Amy leads Nick on a scavenger hunt to find his gift. This year, the gift is her, and she thinks it'll save their marriage. Right?

I know this was, like, his first novel, so he was still building his skills and whatnot, but I feel like this main character changes a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Depraved characters are what make Chuck Palahniuk stand out, but with this book, I feel like he was putting all seven deadly sins into the same character instead of zooming in on a select few.

I love the whole "he is right back where he started" thing though

I have met another classic Chuck Palahniuk touchstone: the incel main character (who we now know had a surprisingly crazy childhood) has met the anti-MPDG who is now haunting him. Love it. KEEP 'EM COMING, CHUCK!!!!

My book was sitting in the same bag as something that started molding, so my copy smells disgusting. Probably won't read it for a little while.

I think I'm on page 20, if my math checks out; I'm reading it as a pdf e-book.

It's got that classic Palahniuk charm. Right out the gate with that terrible-horrible-unforgivable apathetic main character with a really boring job and a sick-and-twisted side gig that makes their life bearable. I wonder what kind of person he's gonna meet that will change his life forever. I could read this formula forever /srs

The way this author is capable of missing the mark is beyond me. If you want to compare wolves to another group that

- once had safe places which have become very dangerous
- has been blamed, vilified and ostracized for centuries
- was killed en masse in the mid-20th century, but is slowly recovering

I would have said Jewish people. Why are you talking about white middle-class women??

I always come back to Palahniuk no matter how hard I try. I know all of his characters are the same, but I kinda like it that way. Like he's some kind of deity who zooms in on random people who fit a certain profile, and then follows them around for a while. I don't like it when authors make a bunch of crazily different characters. It works in movies, but not books. That's just my opinion.

I read this when I was in third grade, and I remember it feeling a lot more complicated and serious. It was like Game of Thrones to me. Reading the book now, I see how adorable and whimsical it is. The characters speak very astutely, and I love how polite the Narnia folk are.

I'd probably understand this book more if I knew more about biology. However, I do have an understanding of philosophy (especially epistemology, cynicism, and existentialism) and a loose grasp on anthropology, which slightly helps to read it. "How to Be Animal" isn't a fun beach read, or something I could read on a car ride. I can only read it when I am 100% ready to comprehend everything I expose my eyes to.

Perfect book for kids who used to crawl around the playground on all fours and pretend they were canids. Ten out of ten, so far.

At first, I was obsessed. Now, I'm not sure how Berry wants readers to feel about wolves. What are we supposed to be thinking? What is her argument? Don't get me wrong --- it's pretty good, especially for non-fiction, but it plays heavily into the ideas of "white woman feminism / white woman persecution." I wish there were more perspectives. This book would have worked better with multiple authors instead of one.
