"There are still Americans who believe the zombie apocalypse could be real... Their use of monsters can become another excuse to dehumanize certain people + excuse violence. They all use the zombie apocalypse to create the world they want, whether the rest of us want that world or not."

"Rather than assuming that fear + violence don't have to be our future, the zombie apocalypse claims a perilous + awful future is our only option. It's a future in which we tear each other apart instead of trying to build something better for all of us. The possibilities are only horrifying + never hopeful."

I didn't realize that goodreads had the original version, aka not revised or expanded. This is the one I'm reading.

The chapter talking about nursing homes that, with patients' input, integrated more bright colors into their main spaces as well as bedrooms. The people who were withdrawn in a bland, pale space becoming engaged and more themselves when around brighter colors and patterns. 🥺

"3: beware the one-party state.
The parties that re-made states and suppressed rivals were not omnipotent from the start; they exploited the historic moment to make political life impossible for their opponents. So support the multi-party system, and defend the rules of democratic elections. Vote in local and state elections while you can. Consider running for office."

"Marrying Bryan was something I *should* want, and it made me feel diseased how little I seemed to want the things that other women my age did without complication."

"Gods, I miss this place. I miss what I thought my life would be. Simple. Quiet. Noble. But I don't miss the woman I was, the one who didn't know her strength. The one who believed everything she read with unfailing confidence, as if the simple act of writing something on a blank page made it gospel."
