When men's voices are the only ones respected legally, and they're the only ones allowed to make laws...women and all of their nuanced humanity, their personalities, their choices, everything about us gets outlawed. 😩

"Should children continue to be illiterate while they tried to change the minds of millions of adults who believed in the superiority if white people?

How could they raise a generation of children to help change the system if the children couldn't read because their parents couldn't read?"

"...as a mature woman in her 50s, she set her sights on government, on the belief that America's best days were ahead of her, on the idea that the marginalized needed to be treated fairly by society & the legal system. She would begin by lobbying the Idaho legislature on her primary goals: 1. Raise the age of consent for girls from 10 to 18. 2. Secure women's suffrage in Idaho. 3. Reform Idaho's prison system."

"The next morning, the word spread quickly about what the women had done --how they ran not from danger, as many men assumed they would, but toward it. How they thought not of saving their own lives but of laying them down so that others might be saved.
Maria was in her late 30s, doing work reserves for strong young men half her age. She kept driving an ambulance, dodging bullets, until the war ended."

It is pretty mind-blowing to me, the effort that the Army put into segregating Black and White people from each other in housing and transportation, in day-to-day training and workdays. Damn.

It remains my favorite fact of the day that women excelled in so many areas of the Army; they were and are excellent portions of the workforce, no matter where they are employed.

"The men lie like anything to stay out of the Army," reported one Army recruiter, "and you girls lie like anything to get in."
