I've built up this book in my head so much that I now find it underwhelming.

The language feels overly mannered (I wonder if I'd feel the same way if I'd managed to find it in Italian, but I think I would), and the people are too neurotic to be appealing to me.

I love this book.

The narrative voice is often somewhat judgy, but obviously struggling with it - you can tell that the narrator (who is presumably Héléne herself) understands that she grew up in a certain millieu, which has shaped her opinions on certain things, and that she is trying to give Martin and his good and bad sides justice.

This makes it a very interesting read.

It's still baby's first political intrigue, but the intrigue has a surprising level of cleverness and complexity for something with a fairytale-esque tone and, like, five characters.

It's a good book.

I'm seeing Attolia from a different angle this time around, I feel like I get more of her personality.
