"There is no greater enemy to vital life-breathing faith than insisting on cultural sameness. When fear rules your theology, God is nowhere to be found in your paradigm no matter how many Bible verses you tack onto it."

"We in the church tend to be more fearful of the perceived sin in the world than of the sin in our own heart."

So true.

"Why do people think that I am not using my gifts in the worship of God if my church does not let women preach or sing solos? Do I have to perform in a church service in order to participate in it? Do performers grow in grace more in grace than participators? It seemed to me that in worship God wanted me to sit down, shut up, and listen, so that I could go and use my gifts out there in the world."

"In a variety of ways, print and other media have the power to establish ideas about what constitutes desired femininity and masculinity with respect to personal traits, behaviors, and so on. These ideas may not always be internally coherent but can provide alternatives to the ideas provided by dominant institutions." Unless the print is itself a dominant institution.

So did these psychologists not notice that indication is a sign and that it has meaning? Because babies figure out indication very early. Nothing like the '2nd year' mentioned here.

I think geography is not his strong point. I began to suspect this when the company came out of the hall of kings on the side towards paranor, yet Shea fell into a rushing river going downstream that took him...back to the other side...rivers flow downhill, not uphill...

But then, I knew for sure because on page 411 the river Mermidon is described as The sluggish river Mermidon, on page 419 it's the swift river...

"Through an extensive interrogation of the linkages between politeness, honorifics, and gender made by linguists and other researchers, on the one hand, and purveyed as social norms to the public via education and media, on the other, Okamoto demonstrates the remarkable consistency of messages to women that , in order to be onnarashii 'feminine', they should speak in ways that are gentle, polite, and refined."

In a world with no knowledge of science and technology, in a world with only mysticism and magic, Shea still somehow knows to describe his feeling of surrender as robot like.

I leave you with this gem.

Here is my question. Why are theorists so fixated on performativity rather than on representation? Maybe people aren't performing particular identities, but are attempting to represent them.

reason, but it's also false because it presupposes that man and woman are merely social constructs rather than biological fact. Behavior is indeed partially socially constructed, but it does not follow that therefore men and women are.

"In particular, the essays here move the field away from the common but problematic assumption that one linguistic form, such as a morphological element or a pitch height, can be directly linked to a single social category, such as gender. This assumption presupposes that one chooses linguistic forms simply because one belongs to the category "woman" (or "man")."

Concept is true, we don't choose langue for only one

...can do it in psychology where we don't even know why people think how they do, let alone how they do it.

We don't know what electric signal means what.

Vygotsky can be forgiven for thinking that it was possible, I mean he was writing in the 60s.

But...now that I know he was inspired by Marx, I'm looking forward to this book a lot less.

Uh.

I don't think it's useful to apply Marxism to psychology, or even to simplistically take the vocabulary of biology and apply it to psychology either. There is no 'cell' of psychology, there is no real single mechanism that produces a single response consistently.

Not even genes do that. Genes can have multiple expressions, and we certainly don't understand all of them, so I think it's simplistic to think we
