Combine “1984” plus “the handmaidens tale” plus “the hunger games” but with the American incarceration rate of black people and you get Chain Gang Allstars, asking humans what they’re capable of. Regardless of whether the reader is in prison or the arena with the characters, in the streets protesting or in board meetings with the rich. The feeling of helplessness is consistent. So chilling.

I enjoyed The Maid and really want to like this book but it’s a lot of memories and not enough story. The first book included a lot of memories and this seems ill timed and out of place. I keep falling asleep. This may go on my DNF.

These are Parables emphasized with poetry and it is textured and interesting. But the author tries so hard to grip her reader that I find my focus falling through the cracks.

Very different than Babel, just as compelling. I’m loving this author.

There just aren’t enough books on these individuals through their own voices. Here is one, explaining why the mental health system and other mentally different populations alike have overlooked and segregated them through time. It’s a sad read but if we don’t know what we did wrong, there stands no chance of us doing better.

Hopefully this gets better. But I think this will turn out to be one of those stories that didn’t need a sequel

Slow crawling this to the close- as hard as this book was to read sometimes (in a brilliant way), I also don’t want it to end!

Shit. If this wasn’t an e-book, I’d have thrown it. 😭
