Shedding an entirely new light on how Russia fell into the Bolshevik's hands. The social and cultural ruts that the country had existed in for centuries shows the reason that western ideologies and economics were not only misunderstood but feared by the Russian masses and peasantry. Very intriguing!

Beautiful. A lifetime of plans and details (good or bad)... ending in a conviction of hope and regret.

Dustin Wayne is on page 90 of 188 of Heart of Darkness
Reading many of the reviews on this book it seems to be the love/hate for it stems from many readers looking for a hearty plot. Much like other "humanity" novels - the story is the vessel. The meaning is underlying. Conrad does use a lot of literature magic tricks (metaphors & alliterations), but his primary message, it seems to me, is the questioning of human morality, fear and callousness towards the unknown.

Reading passages and rereading passages... it's only 30 pages... and it's beautiful. Knowing his backstory and understanding the context within which his cultural, political and historical references are made has made the 15 pages I spent far too long delving into thought provoking and enriching. Specifically his reference to Dostoevsky's quote "Beauty will save the world"
