Two thumbs down.

So far, not impressed. The book has shown only the rantings of a dictator and how he came to power. I had hoped for something of a intellectual biography - how fascism was formed and the ideas behind it. Perhaps I am too quick to judge.

Interesting. The FED was established as a lender of last resort in 1913 (as an american version of the Bank of England). One difference being that the FED is privately owned, intended to be a private-public partnership with semiautonomous, privately funded reserve bank supervised by a public board.

"Their lives had been expended in cheerless labor, their wills broken, their intelligences numbed. Now they were in the earth to which they had given their lives; and slowly, year by year, the earth would take them. Slowly the damp and rot would infest the pine boxes which held their bodies, and slowly it would touch their flesh, and finally it would consume the last vestiges of their substances" (p. 110)

"[...] Lomax had gone thoguh a kind of converstion, an epiphany of knowing something through words that could not be put in words, as Stoner himself once had done, in the class taught by Archer Sloane. Lomax had come to it early, and alone, so that the knowledge was more nearly a part of himself than it was apart of Stoner; but in the way that was finally most important, the two men were alike [...]" (p. 100)

Arnold sets out to defend culture and defines it as the best that men have thought and the aim of which is the perfection of humanity. He does however have problems being concise and more concrete in his defense of culture: how should we live? And why? Why is perfection important? Don't different people have different views of what perfection means?

A bit long winded but nonetheless an interesting read.
