I first read this book when I was 15 as part of my English set work and it's still my favorite childhood books to reread.

Weird but in a good way.

It's definitely not your run of the mill collection of musings and short stories.

"When we place an emphasis on building a beloved community, of which having a partner may be an essential part but not the whole, we free ourselves to lead joyous lives as single folks, and sometimes if not always as celibate folks".

One thing I love about bell hooks is how she lifts up platonic bonds. It is through platonic bonds that we learn love that is constant, consistent, that encourages personal growth, emotional openness and and. So even if a women never finds her romantic love, she will experience love through her platonic bonds. And that love sustains her.

bell hooks almost lost me because I thought she was going in the route of wlw relationships are better than hetero relationships because it's women & they know love but this would contradict what she said earlier about how loving or love is not a woman thing just cause women are primary caregivers. All genders need to learn what loving is. They are not born with it.

I get how gay men can be seen as wearing masculinity in a different way but I disagree that its through them that hetero men can learn new ways of loving women. Gay men can & have weaponized their masculinity against hetero women. And I get that there's a level of comradire between these groups but I genuinely don't think they are that safe space for hetero women.

"Finding a man is not the same as finding love. To find love with a male partner, women have to be clear that this is our desire".

"The key is balance. To live a balanced life, no group of women should feel they need to deny the importance of love. Self-loving, powerful, successful women know that true love abounds in our lives".

Sisterhood : love and solidarity. Once again, bell hooks is reiterating the idea of community & how the individual can find themselves there. hooks also talks about the importance of self-love as a form of freedom.

bell hooks reminding me to love my body,my flesh so that others, should I choose to include them, can delight in its bounty. It begins with me.

"Rather than embracing faulty thinking that encourages us to believe that females are inherently loving, we make the choice to become loving. Choosing love, we affirm our agency, our commitment to personal growth, our emotional openness".

"Why did we ever believe home could only be one place? When existing in these bodies means holding many worlds within us".

The content is close to home but the execution is weird.

This is as adorable as the series. I'm getting giddy as I read it. It's too damn cute.
