She's doing something right because I just read Heart of Darkness, and somehow I find Connell a more despicable character than anyone in that.

The reckless, negligent coawrdice of him, it disgusts me.

Decided to go to sleep and then read a quarter of this, whoops.

Early days, but the man can write.

I am distracted by multiple absolute UNITS in the form of bookclub fantasy stuff, will be better.

I just read a big fabtasy tome for a friend's book club, and it magnified what is special about this kind of literary fiction.

In 1200 pages, that other book, through endless repetition, has worn into my mind some sense of its chatacters.

In 100 pages, this has brought alive a rural Ireland I spent every Sunday in until I was 17. The characters of McGahern's Lake *are* people from Lough Graney at home, genius.

It's like a multi-perspective emotional whirlpool and it's getting faster and faster as it circles to the end.

I have been reading, this is just a very chonky book. It's so good though, better than prophet song to my mind.

Completely, hopelessly, terribly in love with Sally Rooney.

It’s no down and put in Paris and London but it is amazing that 100 years on from Orwell he’s essentially living the same life.

I mean this entirely as self-criticism but Michael Lewis is my Colleen Hoover. The prose is functional, I disagree strongly with the narrators intuitions and interactions with what's going on, but I just can't get enough, I can''t look away.

This is definitely interesting and enjoyable but by Christ does it take awhile to get through.

There's still a lot to go but his genius is obvious, and unlike some other Irish greats I don't think what he's saying (at least in this one) is so steeped in a particular Ireland that it would be unintelligible to someone not from here. Universally universal stuff in here.

Okay so as an Irishman, I think a lot about Ireland and its culture...but I remain a man, hence.

Don't know where this is going, and even if it doesn't go anywhere, I can already tell it's art.


I'm reminded a lot these days that whatever is going on, there is something lovely and deeply reassuring in Irish people making beautiful, Irish things.

Surprisingly horny, not blowing me away though. Will finish but kinda uninspired to read more Lawrence unless I hear something else is better/different.

Despite the rumours, I still do read books, I just have much less time to do so than I would like.
