Convincing account of how the system of mass incarceration put in place through the War on Drugs has created an undercaste of American society that is overwhelmingly black and poor. Explores parallels between this and two other major caste systems used for racial oppression in the U.S.: slavery and Jim Crow legislation. Further explores how the War on Drugs & mass incarceration equates black skin with criminality.

Almost finished, but I'm putting it down for now. It's no Metamorphosis and I have more important books that need my attention.

This is dense, full of events, organizations, and people. So much information is presented in such detail that it's hard to get a handle on everything. I can see this being a useful reference, but think it's failing as a historical narrative. I can't imagine trying to synthesize the amount of detail Gitlin presents into a coherent story; he certainly hasn't done it so far.

Stunning.
