Oh no, will I be tempted to buy this series just to read these?

Engaging and well-written. I’ve never read the Vicki Barr series before. While the qualifications for stewardesses are dated (1947) and inappropriate, Vicki and some of her friends are refreshingly bold, adventuresome career women, which is typical of these series—no wonder gills off the tone liked them!.

Finally, a haunted house for Connie to explore with Kit and their cousins!

So far, the perfect British story from a first rate British story teller!

Finally EAP himself showed up, along with Will Shakespeare. Now it’s interesting.

Obstructionism for the sake of power rather than bipartisanship for the sake of the country is the goal of the current GOP, which I already knew, but it’s more disheartening to read in print and to learn how organized and unprincipled they are about it. It’s clear that Christian supporters are getting played—and are also using the GOP as a means to their ends—but will they at some point conflict?

The protagonist narrator is an idiot! But I’ve come to far to quit now—only 100 pages to go!

A most frustrating protagonist who is incredibly obsessive, impetuous and naive, in spite of multiple experiences that should make him wiser. Having enlisted the help of a man he believes to be the model for and as good at ratiocination as Poe’s Dupin, he continually second guesses his actions and questions his thinking.

I knew this would be a hard read, and it is. The Republican leaders’ efforts to break government to give business more power and profit at the expense of people’s health, safety and civil rights and using religion as an excuse is a more appalling, deliberate and long term strategy than I suspected.

The pace picked up just as I was on the brink of giving up!

Continue or not? So far neither the protagonist nor anyone else is likable nor does the book get rave reviews…so, do I read because it’s a prominent novel about Poe? Avi’s The Man Who Was Poe and In Strange City by Laura Lippman are more engaging.
