The protagonist narrator is an idiot! But I’ve come to far to quit now—only 100 pages to go!

A most frustrating protagonist who is incredibly obsessive, impetuous and naive, in spite of multiple experiences that should make him wiser. Having enlisted the help of a man he believes to be the model for and as good at ratiocination as Poe’s Dupin, he continually second guesses his actions and questions his thinking.

Continue or not? So far neither the protagonist nor anyone else is likable nor does the book get rave reviews…so, do I read because it’s a prominent novel about Poe? Avi’s The Man Who Was Poe and In Strange City by Laura Lippman are more engaging.
