As a parent struggling from the reflections of intergenerational motivations from white ppl of residential schools, the effects are resounding. Throughout this book, and as a survivor of those effects, I wish I could reach my hand out to everyone who feels this and I wish everyone the glue and magnetism to find whomever you’re looking for that was lost in this fucked up mess of genocidal after effects.

and their environments. We need to view addiction simultaneously from many different angles. Or at least while examining from one angle we need to keep the others in mind.

Ch.12 paraphrase
All addictions have a biological dimension as well as psychological dimensions. Avoid the trap of reducing addiction to brain 🧠 chemicals, or nerve circuits or any kind of neuropsychological, psychological or sociological data. It’s impossible to understand addiction from any one perspective no matter how accurate. Addiction is a complex condition, a complex interaction between human beings…

I think this book really gave me insight in to what happens AFTER leaving residential school. The confusion, racism, post-trauma effects of a Mission (also residential schools but by some legalities, not always if ever, recognized as a residential school) and the violence that survivors endure on top of surviving a release in to the world. It’s an important perspective & insight.

Had to pause it here while the author talked about Chartier and the gag over his mouth. It was a bit triggering for me tbh. Too close for any comfort or even empathy.

I’m just now on the Chapter about Métis Settlements which is where my dad currently lives. Jim Brady & Malcolm Norris - I remember reading books about them in my early 20’s purely out of interest (not because any educational curriculum suggested it).
Nationalist of the Métis Nation who began talking about anti-colonialism and were both highly educated.
Talks about the Métis diversity in this chapter.

I e read a lot of important books this year and I’m still on the double consumption of audio and visual experiences in soaking up stories, art and information.

If you’re Métis- you must read this book. If you think you’re Métis, you must read this book.

Last year, my dear friend was reading this book and I believe it was the last before he died. It was finally that he understood me as a Métis person.
