K. J. Parker's "The Best Man Wins" is a cool (maybe cold) twist on the student/master trope. I love Parker's use of first person narration.

Robin Hobbs' "Her Father's Sword" is heartbreaking. I can't write a decent review without lots of spoilers right now though.
