Wow, just finished Part II on Mercurius. The summary is ingenuously insightful in describing Mercurius as a compensation for Christ. Not the devil but all the shadow components of man purged by the uncompromising light of Christ.

I began reading this at "Psychology of the Transference". Jung describes transference in terms of alchemy. An appropriate parallel as both operate heavily in the psychology of projection. Jung does a great job in receiving alchemy in the process. A must read if you wish to understand Jung's understanding of alchemy. I'm working my way up to Mysterium Coniunctionis.

I love reading Marie-Louis von Franz's works. She is able to reveal complex topics such as Alchemy with a plainspoken ease

Quite an illuminating read. Jung goes back into history in discussing the problem of type in human nature. Going back into ancient Greek philosophy, father's of church to more modern literature including poetry. So far the most enlightening read of psychology I've encountered.

This is my first direct exposure to Goethe's Faust and while I'm only in Act I, page 30, I already feel fairly comfortable thanks to the extended readings in the Interpretive Notes and other rich supplemental reading provided by the Norton Critical Edition. I struck gold finding this used book at Half Priced Books!

Jung demonstrates his mastery of his ability to interpret a simple fairytale in complicated psychic terms. Fairytales are an expression of aspects of the human psyche. Saving the conclusion for later.:-)

David is on page 45 of 260 of Anatomy of the Psyche: Alchemical Symbolism in Psychotherapy (Reality of the Psyche)
Good read so far, explaining the alchemic process of Calcination symbolically as the first step in the Individuation process. A burning of the ego so to speak in order to clear the path for awareness of the Self so that the Phoenix may rise from the ashes. Alchemy basically is a symbolic language to describe psychic development.

Very intriguing. The Black Sun, Sol niger, a symbol representing the darkness that lie ahead in spiritual quest, beginning in the partial light of knowledge, advancing into a greater knowledge that is so profound that it can be described as the "darkness of unknowing."
