An intense read with nasty little humorous daubs. Eliane is a tough cookie, jarring me, and those trapped in her story.

Well, after an abrasive first paragraph that made me wonder how rough a ride this might be, I've settled in, and have a feeling this will be a winner. We'll see. Simenon, Bussi, and Dard all come to mind - but also Goodis and Woolrich. It should be facinating to see what Elle is capable of, once she gets going...

It was amusing to hit the chapter in this that focuses on Vera Caspary so soon after reading one of her novels, The Secret of Elizabeth. Of course, the novel Laura got discussed the most - but the other Caspary book Martin Edwards has time to really highlight is…The Secret of Elizabeth! It’s a great read, for sure.

Really looking forward to this, because of how good The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun turned out to be. Could this be even better?

Well, my gloom over some BookTube stuff is out of the “universal loathing” phase, so I’m ready to come back to life at Goodreads. It’s fair to say I’ll likely never perform another random act of kindness for a stranger again, and I’m going to be a ghost at YouTube indefinitely. Whatever, on we go. As far as this book goes, I can see why Craig Spector likes it so much; I like it too!

Something that has happened to me over in the BookTube community has left me a bit down in the dumps. I’m still not sure how things will be resolved, but I’m feeling like someone who did something nice and got punched in the teeth for it. So - I’m not going to be writing reviews here at Goodreads for a while, or saying much. And I’m dropping right out of the BookTube community. Need downtime.

I guess I should be sick of the amnesia trope rearing its ugly, empty head - but the truth is I’ve been pulled right into this. I have read Laura by Caspary, and was surprised to find out this author was published into the 1970s. Anyway - very happy with this, thus far. All the main characters are interesting (even the amnesiac).

Chapter 30, with a focus on noir Crime fiction. I’m glad that Frank Gruber got mentioned, even if it was just part of a lead-in to a fuller discussion of Cornell Woolrich. Meanwhile…I must read more Japrisot…
