Yuck! "He caught sight of a jar of Vaseline sitting innocuously on a nearby shelf." Traveling carnival in an empty storage tent. You know what they are about to use the Vaseline for. With NO IDEA what has been stuck in that stuff. I've been around mechanics and others who stick dirty tools (no pun intended) in the jar so I can imagine what that stuff is doing in a carnival storage tent.

STOP using shower gel as a lubricant! Actually, before writing about try it out yourself, perfumed hand creams too. Actually, anything your character might reach for instead of lube. You have an anus, do the research. Give it a try, not everything is created equal.
