Lots happening, and I'm scared for all these characters!

I'm appreciating that there are pretty good reminders about what happened at the end of the last book, but I'm going to have to review a few things.

Excited to be back in the world of this series! Things are emotional already.

This is great. I'm loving all the points of view and getting different pieces of everyone's backstory, and I'm very curious what will come of the central mystery about the hit-and-run.

We've met three of the viewpoint characters so far, and I'm already really feeling for all of them.

Jacob's presentation of the events from her life is beautifully, emotionally done. I like the switching back and forth between stories from growing up and conversations with her son/husband/friends from recent years. And the art style is fantastic!

This story revolves around an intricate political situation involving agreements between humans and gods, and it's fascinating!

Intriguing political situation, characters, and narrator. Always exciting to step into a new Ann Leckie world!

"Outside, two men and a woman strolled by. They'd come up the hill, were laughing and panting, loosening their scarves, unbuttoning their coats. No such thing in San Francisco as going out for a little walk."

Heck of a historical detail: "The dental offices were always looking for pianists, and all they needed was someone able to play loudly enough to mask the sounds of screaming. Piano lessons were a very practical plan."

Really enjoying this. It's sort of comedy of manners, set in 1890s San Francisco.

Enjoying the entertaining characters, the 1890s San Francisco setting, and the introduction of the possibility of visitations from the dead. Eager to see where this is all going!

Some heavy stuff as all the pieces of the story are converging.

"The most enjoyable parts of a social occasion are often the solitary pleasures of anticipation and recollection. But it is sadly true that one cannot relish these without having had an invitation to the party itself."

"I don't know if I survived or not. I feel like part of me never came back from the Old Mother. Like I'm here, but I'm also still there, too." A lot of intense stuff about trauma and memory in this fascinating novel.

These dynamic sentences: "Reverend Cherry's whole style was thick cane syrup mixed with lightning and lard. It really was. He had that sleepy, slow, dripping voice. Sounded like burning Bubble Wrap was up in his throat."

I have been excited for this book since it was announced, and now it's out and off to a great start!

I cannot wait to find out where both these storylines are going and whether/how they're going to collide.
