... And now the sexual can stop. Please. Too long. I'm bored. Pacing: needs improvement.

Somewhat mollified now that there are more detailed scenes, but I can't help but feel... deflated?

What the--?! All that build up and you're gonna give me the first full sex scenes IN SUMMARY FORM NARRATIVE? You must be kidding. Not. Impressed.

It's picking up speed now, kids! There was an earlier wobbly moment of "should I abandon this since I'm only enjoying the present moment interaction scenes and not the long, wordy "telling" reminiscing scenes," but now that the two men have met, and the race is on with James' dying pops, and the conflict of attraction complicated by messed-up daddy issues.... Oh! Golly, I'm in!

Umpire shouts, "SAFE!" Okay, redeemed. Behaviour is believable. Very well written next scene, when little quiet Charlie man-ups to the big man and the big man shuts down.

Weak motivation. Why the hell wouldn't Charlie tell James that his father is looking for him?! It's just happenstance that they met on a blind date--*lucky* happenstance they are attracted to each other. What risk in telling James the truth? Maybe make things awkward for a spell cuz James might hate his dad and not want to hear about him while Charlie likes James dad? Couples can hate each others' parents, yanno.

OOOH, big--much bigger than Charlie--muscular, gruff, tattooed, rides a motorcycle? Weeeeeeelll then! And, finally, the two MCs meet. Much too long of a wait.

The parts of the story where Charlie is reminiscing about his dead husband, Jesse, are info dumps. Very boring. Unlike books such as After Ben, the memories that make up who Charlie is now are not delivered in a lively, compelling manner. Just a blah-blah-blah manner. The parts of the story that are interacting in the present make me stop, slow down, and read more carefully. Good.

WAH! Lol-ing! "Deanna wanted me to invite you over tomorrow night.” Beth continued to glare. “To say good-bye. In-law is leaving.” “She has a name, Beth.” "So does Satan, but I don’t say that name out loud, either."

My life isn’t better (or worse) than yours, it’s just different than yours."

"Over the years, the bad memories had started to become less vivid and the few pleasant memories he had of his brief life in this old Victorian house had taken root in his psyche. But he still wasn’t sure if the good memories were quite heavy enough to outweigh the bad." So true! All in how we see it in our psyches. Some of my siblings want to torch our childhood home; others, to buy it, live in it forever.

Oh maaaaan. I really *really* don't like the narrative technique of flashbacks. This book starts with two, one in 1981 (which was short and poignant so, okay, I accept) and the other was 1984 (which was longer and I skipped). So, note to self: go back and read if I feel I need it later. Now. *finally* it's "present day." So I can finally start reading fur reeeeal. Bitches.

Interesting story, but the writing style leaves me confused at times.

I think that I will be required to give a high rating because the MCs lesbian friend name is Deanna.
