“Across the planet, slowly but surely, we are seeing increasing democratization, a growing number of grassroots organizations, and more understanding of our fragile interconnectedness. On the other hand, the world is getting hotter, military technologies are increasingly lethal, and 1 billion people go to sleep hungry every night. The tragedy and the opportunity of this moment are exactly the same.”

I picked this book up to learn more about the science behind meditation. In the introduction I learned this book in no way explores Buddhism. So far, no detailed discussions about how faith interacts with a contemplative and mindful lifestyle. Which I've practiced for many years. However the authors acknowledge (in passing) that the unknown invisible greater spiritual realm is related to mind brain body cooperation.

I find this book useful and enlightening when the author is not discussing the functions of the brain and what it is doing while we are trying to be better people. As I read deeper into the book I find the brain jargon and referencing become less and less making it a more enjoyable read. We will see how it ends.

This make literally makes me happy when I read it and I will give it 5 stars on the day I finish it. How much do I value happiness, I wonder?

اگر مي تونستيم گذشته دشمنانمون رو ببينيم، انقدر درد و رنج براي ديدن وجود داشت كه جلو پيدايش هر خشم و كينه اي رو نسبت بهشون مي گرفت.

Ignorance is the fundamental source of suffering.
Appraising a situation more accurately leads to greater positive emotions and fewer negative ones.

Buddhism encourages people to take nothing on faith alone and does require a belief in God. It also has a model of the mind that translates well to psychology and neurology.
We can do small things inside our mind that will lead to big changes in our brain and our experience of living.

My daughters school book. Wonderful. I'm jumping around alot. Some good ideas on kindness and compassion and how in order to give these we have to first give kindness and compassion to ourselves.

At worst a self-help book.
I've never read one of those, but am looking forward to see if I can get pulled in.

"Emotions for something naturally intensify attention toward it, plus they engage the brain as a whole; consequently, more neural networks are involved with the object of attention." (195)
