The academy buildings were big and elegant, and she heard constantly from Tim and other cadets about the distinguished lineage of West Point graduates. But the place was a little odd. Some of the cadets seemed so socially awkward. They were brilliant and motivated, yes, but not always wise to the ways of the world. Put them all together, though, and they fit perfectly, like a four-thousand-piece puzzle.

The campus seemed an irony-free oasis, both severe and beautiful, apart from the rest of America.
