Wheels inside wheels spiralling ever deeper... I wish I had a better memory that I could store up and recall all of this detail at will. This Twit is fleetingly enlightened.

David Markson writes this critical narrative with such finesse. So compelling. His erudition and distinctive style is like a torch light sweeping across pictures I've only viewed myopically and in semi-darkness. Wowser.

Considering reading thisonly after I've read Dante, and Marlowe's Faust, will have to do that soon, though.

Actual commentary on the themes would have been good. It's a bit dry in its singleminded focus on symbol extrication.

Very thorough job by Markson. There is a bit of memoir at the end with a great scene of Lowry actually drinking Markson's aftershave and then getting into a tussle with Conrad Aiken, who was both their mentor.

The amount of references and allusions is, quite honestly, staggering. The strangeness of the narrative that I originally chalked up to booze and orientalism actually has to do with Lowry's requirements that his plot be driven by his symbolism.
