Big issues regarding consent towards the end of chapter 12… In a way, this scene between Lilith, Joseph and Nikanj mirrors the larger situation of both humanity as a species, and Lilith as a representative of that species, in relation to the Oankali. Humans may try to say no, but they will be made to follow the will of the Oankali, and might be robbed even if their suffering as their agency is stripped away.
