Authors expand on seasonal variaton using Inuit. In summer, people lived in small, mobile hunter-gatherer bands with situational leadership and clearer notions of property. In winter, they gathered in large communal houses where resources were shared and relations became more egalitarian, often reinforced through ritual enforcement roles. This shows power was organized long before agriculture or permanent settlement.

It’s eating up all of January working through this one, but seeing as it’s upending the foundations of how we contextualize human history, I’d say it’s worth it! 100 more pages and I’m looking forward to the conclusion to bring it all together and lock in the ideas.
