Mma Ramotswe may not use the conventional methods one would expect from a private detective but this likeable character and her adventures solving some unusual cases for the citizens of Botswana makes for an enjoyable and easy read. The book is somewhat short and I felt there was alot of unnecessary background info, but still a very interesting book in which the author gives readers a glimpse of life in Botswana.

A very sweet character study through a collection of stories. Also some clever narrative techniques that reveal the author to be sly yet unassuming - with a purpose to entertain through warming the heart. Humble yet not simplistic, as the other reviewers seem to suggest. The author has a disciplined and skillful command of narrative conventions which makes his stories thoroughly enjoyable.

There she stayed, looking after her father, for the next fourteen years. He died shortly after her thirty-fourth birthday, and that was the point at which Precious Ramotswe, now parentless, veteran of a nightmare marriage, and mother, for a brief and lovely five days, became the first lady private detective is Botswana.
