So it's one big mystery, or multiple mysteries, but will any of them be solved?

There are no characters to root for. It's all about the colony, but considering what's transpired, I don't know if there's enough there to care.

First 95 pages were a snoozefest. Finally seeing something happening.

Slower going but I've finally made it to the initial landing on Gehenna.

We're out to the landing now. It sort of reminds me of reading Dragon's Dawn

I just realized how much amusement I get from seeing 'dated tech' in Sci-fi. But since this was from the Early 1980s, it's understandable. Reading it from a 2025 standpoint, it's a bit fun. Tapes and fax printouts were the more affordable tech of this early part of the 80s. Heck my house still had a rotary wall phone even then.

Fascinating cultural disparity between Union and the Alliance/Merchanters.

The tech/military speak was interesting to look up, though there's still some I couldn't find. Classes M,P, and V in particular. I love the term deepteach though the concept behind it sort of sent a bit of a chill down my back.

This is one of many novels set in Ms. C.J. Cherryh's Union-Alliance Story Universe. I believe this one is set most likely after the Company Wars or towards the end of it. One day I'll have to try reading the books in chronological order, though they are stand alone and don't have to be (as Ms. Cherryh mentions, like picking a book about a point in history and reading it) Just starting.
