Got that nice shiver of excitement you feel twenty pages into a book when you know it's going to be good.

If you’ve never fallen on your face, odds are you haven’t attempted anything worth a damn.

Most teams are not hyper-passionate or overly enthusiastic about technology. Predictably, they are focused on delivering the next project or improving on the aspects of the development life cycle that are causing them pain. Therefore, enthusiastic apprentices can often succumb to the urge to fly under the radar. They either repress their enthusiasm altogether, or allow it to manifest only outside of their day jobs.

In order to climb, you must leave the sure footing, letting go of what you already do well and possibly slipping downward into a ravine. If you never let go of what you already do well, you may continue to make steady progress, but you’ll never get off the plateau.

It is possible to learn a language on your own, but it takes a long time to learn the spirit of a language unless you interact with experts.

Apprentice means having the attitude that there’s always a better/smarter/faster way to do what you just did and what you’re currently doing. Apprenticeship is the state/process of evolving and looking for better ways and finding people, companies and situations that force you to learn those better/smarter/faster ways.

Long time back when i had started my work as a software engineer, i spent endless hours to solve programmatic problems. Every solution kept me energized to solve the next one.. over the time i lost interest in solving programmatic problems and i became manager. Now i solve different sort of problems...

Un libro bastante bueno, con algunos conceptos un poco raros, pero que te puede dejar mucho como desarrollador de software.

Finished your first language. I need to change the pacing. And also switch the AI course to flutter.

Book seems to be about thinking while writing code. Claims it will change the nature of me coding.

This is a book about good habits of thinking and behavior for apprentices in software engineering from a leader in a movement that encourages us to think about writing software as a craft and to think about becoming a developer as analogous to the process of becoming a smith or other craftsperson in the craft tradition of the middle ages.

What a thoroughly great read. From the seemingly obvious (you never know what is!) to the new (obvious to someone else), this was great, and deserving of a more thorough reflection.

They really could have left out this conclusion. I can't stand all this nonsense about how "true" software masters have yet to be revealed because of how unique, undescribable, and new an art software development is. Best practices are so poorly documented / understood because our field places so little emphasis on developing good communication skills and critical thinking.

I generally find Software Craftsmanship™ books kinda dry and centered on programmers from a different generation / background. BUT! things I appreciate about this book so far:
- written by a family therapist turned software developer
- It's formatted as a hypertext! Embedded links encourage you to jump around to different "recipes" (e.g. Expose your ignorance). Note to self: technical blogging in Twine next time

Well structured guide to software craftsmanship. It has actionable advice not only for apprentices, but even more so for (self-proclaimed) masters.
