This section flew by. When it's just the narrator, and less of the commoners, the English seems much sharper. There are plenty of plot holes, but this book isn't interested in plot as much as satire, so the story moves to serve that end. It's a brutal world, but I liked chapter 35 all the same. "The king was a good deal more than a king, he was a man." and "Words are only painted fire; a look is the fire itself."

It's such a polarizing book so far. Some pages are a slog, and others seem to fly by. Never knew what the King's Evil was before, so I'm learning things. The scene in the smallpox hut was heartbreaking, and then what follows is such an odd and thought-provoking turn. I know there's a war coming, and I'm interested to see if Hank's view of violence is tempered at all, or if he maintains his witty sarcasm, as I expect.

This is not an easy read, haha. The language is thick and antiquated. I don't mind, as it sets the tone well, but the edition I'm reading big. It converts 480 pages into 275, without abridgement, haha. The pages are double-columned, and "illuminated" which is awesome, but the progress feels slow when my 40 pages are worth 70 of other editions. The book is very funny and thought-provoking though! My first Twain read.
