در فصل اول با نام داستان‌های کهنه فرای از تمهید گزاره دوگانه در مورد منتقدان ادبی صحبت می‌کند و این دو قطبی را از ایلیاد و ادیسه آغاز می‌کند و به مقایسه بن جانسن و شکسپیر در نوشتن کمدی می‌پردازد. این مقایسه راهگشای شناخت هرچه بیشتر ساختار کمدی هم در آثار شکسپیر و هم در آثار جانسن است.
