Curious to see how much i already know and what is new and whether i agree with how they phrase things. Possibly more for people newer to the topic? Tbd

You really need to sit down for this one to understand it, because the way the concepts are explained is quite complex

Picked this book up from tate modern years ago, never decided to read it but so glad I have started reading. Offers ‘fresh perspectives’ I say fresh but after reading this book the ideas ‘trans’ have been around and widely accepted for years. Enjoyed reading about 100 years ago Iran employed woman in jobs, before women in Britain had been legalised to vote!

The graphic design gives me a migraine. Really. Whoever thought this is artsy: no. It’s hard to read and confusing.
Content-wise it’s interesting so far.
There was a definition on page 30-something I would disagree with slightly. I know I might be nitpicking, but some of the terms should not be used and I already saw „better“ definitions in other books. But except for that I like the book so far.

Unions did not support women of/in the working class... I'm shocked!

"Early Shintoism [in Japan] is thought to have included the worship of Amaterasu, the creator and sun goddess, leading to a matriarchal religion in which feminine qualities were embraced and admired in balance with masculine ones."

"When the constructed status of gender is theorized as radically independent of sex, gender itself becomes a free-floating artifice, with the consequence that man and masculine might just as easily signify a female body as a male one, and woman and feminine a male body as easily as a female one."

I originally wanted to jump into the next Brandon Sanderson but I'm still shaken after The Wall of Storms, so I need a refresher before jumping into the next epic story.
So non-fiction it is. This book's been waiting on my shelf for a while now. It's nice and short so the perfect refresher that also hopefully provides me with the education on gender that I need!

I pre-ordered this, based mainly on the author's tweet. I've only flicked through it so far, but it's impressive. The format is innovative and modern. It's designed for skimming: highly illustrated, clearly sectioned, and with key points in big text. Detailed index, and plenty of sources. A good resource, I'm sure.
Odd that my edition is clad entirely in lurid pink, though.

I am not a fan of the different sizes in letters. It is distracting and makes me think this book could have been less than 50 pages long had it done in the normal way. I'm sure there is some grand explanation for it, but it is just annoying to me. Also, no new info in the first 14 pages. It's kind of basic.
