Gosh, I forgot how pompous Poe can be when he tries.

As someone who cannot play chess (I know the basic rules, but my brain is incapable of planning ahead, I can only react to immediate things) I am slightly delighted at the shade being thrown at it. I often hear that one’s ability to play chess is a measure of one’s intelligence, so it’s nice to hear elsewise.

Este segundo conto foi "uma dor de cabeça", não percebi patavina dos acontecimentos. Foi 90% só um monólogo do Dupin sobre o caso ao longo de umas 30 pág 😵‍💫

El Dupin está loco perdido, no entiendo nada del libro. Yo solo quería misterios e investigaciones y no deducciones raras sacadas de la nada y reflexiones que no vienen a cuento...

"Todavía no he hallado al matemático...que sostenga no clandestinamente como punto de fe que x2+ px es absoluta e incondicionalmente igual a q. Dígale a uno de esos caballeros, a guisa de experimento, que cree usted que pueden presentarse ocasiones en las cuales x2+ px resulte no ser igual a q y...será mejor que se aleje corriendo de su lado, porque sin la menor duda intentará derribarle de un puñetazo."

Entre que lo leo a minicachos en el metro y que está escrito de forma profunda y reflexiva me he enterado de poco. No ha llegado a ninguna conclusión? No me gusta que vaya simplemente sacando deducciones sobre lo que ponen en los periódicos y no llegando a ninguna conclusión. Espero que no todos los de Poe sean así.

The murder in the second story started very interesting and mind-blowing, but the way it ended just disappointed me. Dupin proved every thought wrong and solved the murder, but it was cut short due to privacy issues with a parallel with a real murder in the US. The story had so much potential; it was narrated longer and solved more partially but fell short in the end.

The first story of this book was quite interesting and impossible to imagine. I compared my thinking style and Dupin’s thinking style along the way, and I wasn’t even close to the outcome. Are there really minds like his in the real world, or was his thinking style constructed by Poe? Imagining and writing such a story is very unique, and by just a look, his protagonist solves a seemingly unsolvable mystery.

Finished The Mystery of Marie Roget.

Oh wow. The extra tidbit information at the end, about The Mystery of Marie Roget being based off an actual crime? Made me go down the rabbit trail, searching for more information about Mary Rogers. It was definitely quite interesting to read about.

Anyway, time to get back on track.

Next up, the finale: The Purloined Letter.

Finished The Murders in the Rue Morgue.

I'm leaning towards 4 stars for that story. The audiobook is quite relaxing to listen to, and I'm loving the music they went with.

Next up: The Mystery of Marie Roget.

A bit disappointed so far .. this read is not what I expected when I picked up this book
