there is no way to live in a body on an earth in a universe this complex and not carry questions in your pockets like accumulated change. i have come to fear my lack of answers far less than humans who claim to have them all.

code switch. “why should my tongue choke on itself for my intelligence to be proven? i will not call my voice colloquial when yours is always welcome in its natural form. my words nach b/w two languages fighting over them… i will not italicize all the parts of myself that make no sense to you.”

“product recall. in this world worth is defined by the way poreless skin stretches across correctly chiseled bone by the places where fat strategically stores itself by the obedience we hold against our own heads—safety removed as we discard all the pieces of us that do not fit within the plastic mold” I don’t typically read poems but wow, every page is so empowering & beautiful. I am loving this book so far

listening to the audiobook (that is read by the author) you can hear the pain in her voice as she reads the words

ive been trying for years to bring it to the table.
to redirect its attention. make it see reason.
to have a constructive conversation about all the good
we could do if we were on the same side. but my heart has
a will of its own and only ever speaks to me through
a clenched jaw and tearful eyes. its rarely had ears for me
and im a shitty negotiator anyways. i somehow always
listen long enough to forget my own point.

sometimes
no matter how hard you try
the soil just isn't right
and the water goes nowhere
but downward.
even the most carefully planted seeds
cannot flourish where they were never
meant to stay.

"when they throw
the word feminist
at you like a fist
against your ribs
like an aged curse
like your mother's shame
pry it fom their fingers
and weave it into your tongue
drape it across your skin
or abandon it all together
but remember that
this weapon is yours
to use however it is
you please."

The poems are complicated. They’re honesty. I have to pause a few times to reread an clarify the meaning of some lines.

writing about the
way your tongue has
been stolen from its mother

believe me when i say

Once an author told me that she hoped her book would be such a good friend to me. And it was.
This book has been such a good friend to me, too.
